TAMAHAGANE STEEL - Japanese steel made by traditional charcoal melting. The porous material of sponge-like structure contains impurities and unevenly distributed carbon in the range of 1-1.5%. During the forging and folding process (around 10 folds), all the slag and impurities of the carbon steel are burned off and the clean steel is folded into a blade with uncompromising strength and a very sharp cutting edge. Approximately 3-4 kg of oroshigane is required to produce 1 kg of homogenized steel.
This steel can be recognised by its distinctive appearance: high-quality tamahagan steel has the usual shiny silver appearance. Orange, blue or red dots can sometimes be seen on its surface. It is not an impurity, but the result of a natural oxidation process.
Wakizashi is a Japanese samurai short sword with the same appearance as the katana. The Wakizashi was carried in a pair of daishou, as a backup weapon. The wakizashi blade is made using the same process as a katana, but should not exceed about 60 cm in length. Most often, broken blades of long swords (katanas) were used for making them. The wakizashi was considered a guardian of honour and was almost never put away by the samurai. Even in his own home, the samurai kept his wakizashi handy in case of sudden attack. He wore it tucked behind his kaku-obi belt, blade up, so that he could respond to a sudden attack from the enemy directly from its sheath. In the case of ritual suicide (sppuka) , the samurai used his wakizashi, or more commonly, a dagger tanto.
