Goza Igusa – Tatami Omote (畳表) for Tameshigiri (試し斬り)

The original Japanese chopping mats made from the golden Igusa variety are characterized by extreme density and strength, making them one of the most demanding challenges for the seku and tameshigiri test. Unlike the younger, green Igusa mats, which are softer and relatively easy to chop, the golden Igusa require not only precise technique but also strength and control. By comparison, non-Igusa chopping mats, often made of less dense materials, provide less resistance and are therefore much easier to try chopping. A special category is the so-called beach mats, which, because of their lightweight construction, present the least challenge and are therefore unsuitable for serious advanced chipping practice.

Preparation:

1. Wrap into a roll: Roll the mat tightly and secure with rope, electrical tape or rubber bands.
2. Soak for 24 hours.
