In 1896, wholesaler Tasaburo Shigematsu made an agreement with blacksmith Teji Murakami in Miki City to produce these knives. The knives were such a success with the people, including the Imperial Court, that in 1899 the "Higonokami Knife Union" was founded, which at its peak had as many as 40 member companies and over 200 workers. Higonokami was known and carried by everyone, Japanese carpenters, school children, people for everyday use. But over time, poor quality imitations began to appear, so in 1910 the trademark Higonokami was registered. In 1911, the Crown Prince and later Emperor Taisho even bought it and this increased Higonokami's popularity. Production continued even during the wars when raw materials were scarce. But as more utility knives began to come onto the market, Higonokami knives began to dwindle. The only manufacturer that can use the Higonokami trademark remains Mitsuo Naggao's Nagao Kanakoma Factory. This is now the fifth generation that still produces these knives. The knives are packed in several pieces in blue and gold cardboard boxes.
