Chinese swords

European swords

• European swords are characterized by a great variety, from medieval longswords to Renaissance rapiers.
• The most famous types:
• Longsword: Straight, double-edged, with a straight guard, suitable for slashing and stabbing.
• Rapier: A slender, lightweight sword designed for stabbing attacks and precision swordplay.
• Claymore: The great two-handed swords of the Scottish Highlands, known for their impressive length and weight.

History and use:

• In medieval times, the longsword was the primary weapon of knights and a symbol of noble status.
• The rapier and other light swords became popular during the Renaissance, when the emphasis was on swordsmanship and elegance.
• Europeans developed fencing techniques such as the German and Italian schools, focusing on a combination of strength and tactics.

Japanese swords

Typical characteristics:

• The best known is the katana, which is curved, single-edged and highly sharp. Other types include the wakizashi (shorter sword) and the tanto (dagger).
• Japanese swordsmiths used complex forging techniques such as layering steel (damascus) to achieve a combination of hardness and flexibility.
• Swords are often decorated with symbols and details that reflect the family crest or samurai philosophy.

History and use:

• The katana originated in the Muromachi period (14th-16th centuries) and became an icon of the samurai.
• Japanese swords were designed for fast, accurate attacks and had strong spiritual and ceremonial value.
